About Preconception Care
What is Preconception Care?
Preconception Care is a set of strategies that are to begin before pregnancy to promote the health and well-being of the to-be parents. These strategies, provided to individuals or couples, are implemented by addressing certain factors and optimizing the to-be mother's health before pregnancy to improve both maternal outcomes and baby's health.
Importance and Benefits of Preconception Care
Research has shown that an individual’s health and lifestyle choices before conception can significantly influence the health and outcome of the baby. By addressing certain factors, preconception care can dramatically reduce the incidence of fetal diseases and death along with birth disorders. This in turn leads to healthier pregnancies and improved long-term outcomes for the baby by reducing risk of preterm birth, maternal diseases and early identification of issues.
Who Needs Preconception Care?
Preconception care is for anyone and everyone who is planning to get pregnant in the near future. It is not just for the women who wants to get pregnant but also for her partner. This is because both the to-be mother and father’s health and lifestyle plays a role in the development of the baby and outcome of the pregnancy. Preconception care is particularly needed by individuals who have medical conditions and those who are having difficulty getting pregnant.

Preconception Care FAQs
What are the key components of preconception care?
- Health education and family planning: Individuals receive information about healthy lifestyle choices that will support pregnancy and to help with planning when to start a family.
- Screening of medical conditions: Individuals are screened for common conditions such as diabetes, infections, high blood pressure and appropriate treatment is started.
- Genetic testing: Genetic testing and couple counselling are necessary to know the risk of any inherited conditions before making a reproductive choice.
- Immunization: Vaccinations may be important to protect against diseases for both the mother and the baby.
When should I start preconception care?
Preconception Care should be started during the “preconception period”. Preconception period is the time before conception occurs and is the window during which optimisation of maternal and fetal outcomes is possible. This is a duration of at least 3 months before you plan conception. For certain medical conditions, preconception care needs to be started much earlier, depending on what the condition and the treatment course is.
What lifestyle changes should I make before pregnancy?
Lifestyle changes are integral to preconception care. These changes include encouraging individuals to quit smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, avoiding use of recreational drugs, promoting regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight. In addition, environmental exposure to radiation, pollutants and chemicals, and certain medications may also need to be controlled after discussing with your doctor. Stress management is another lifestyle change that needs to be included before pregnancy.
How does preconception care improve fertility?
There are various factors that influence infertility in couples. Preconception Care addresses these potential risk factors and optimizes health before pregnancy. It aims to create an environment that is favourable for conception, implantation of uterus and development of the embryo. Embryo development involves various physiological processes that begin early in pregnancy including organ formation and fetal growth. Preconception Care focuses on strategies that help with the physiological processes involved in conception.

General Guidelines for Preconception Care
These are the major guidelines to be followed for preconception care:
- Reproductive planning: Reproductive goals should be discussed along with any apprehensions. When pregnancy is desired, activities and medications that may affect fertility need to be instructed.
- Folic acid: All individuals who are desiring to get pregnant should start folic acid supplementation and should consume a balanced diet rich in folate. This is especially important in those who are at risk for neural tube defect development.
- Family and genetic history: During the preconception period, it is vital to discuss with your doctor about the risk of any inheritable disorders based on family history and genetic susceptibility.
- Weight: Optimal weight should be maintained with Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18.5 and 25 kg/m^2
- Medical conditions: Routine health check-ups are needed to assess for diabetes, high blood pressure, infection, sexually transmitted diseases or any chronic medical conditions so that it can be treated before conception.
