What is Postnatal Care?
Postnatal care is the care provided to the mother and her baby after birth for upto 6 weeks which is important for the short-term as well as long-term health outcomes of the mother and her baby. This helps the mother in adjusting to life after pregnancy and in recovering adequately from childbirth. It should begin within 24 hours after delivery with at least 3 postpartum visits. It ends when the mother’s body has returned to her pre-pregnancy state.

- Provides psychosocial support for the mother
- Promotes postpartum healing and faster recovery
- Relieves the pain and discomfort experienced by the mother
- Improve the overall well-being of the mother and the baby

How long does postnatal recovery take?
The recovery period in the postnatal phase varies widely as it is a period of intense healing from childbirth. It ranges from 4 weeks to a few months. The duration depends on what kind of delivery was performed, whether there were any problems during delivery and the current health condition of the mother.
In 1-2 months, recovery of the uterus to its original size, stopping of bleeding and clearance to exercise occurs.
In a few months, vaginal pain reduces, full bladder and bowel control returns, and energy levels may increase.
What are common postnatal health concerns?
The common postnatal health concerns are:
- Postpartum depression - this is transient baby blues common after delivery
- Postnatal bleeding - bleeding through the vagina with clots
- Vaginal pain - due to trauma and vaginal tears during childbirth
- Perineal wound healing - healing of the structures which got damaged during childbirth
- Breastfeeding problems - problems with latching or inadequate milk production
- Breast engorgement - this happens when the breasts become full and tender
- Postpartum weight gain - difficulty with losing excess weight
- Bladder and bowel problems - urine/fecal leakage or even constipation
How to care for a newborn after delivery?
During the initial days after delivery, it is essential to:
- Keep the newborn warm, with 1-2 layers of clothes and a cap if required
- Keep the newborn clean, particularly the face and the buttocks area
- Breastfeed the baby exclusively (minimum 6 months duration)
- Let the baby sleep on his/back or side
- Keep the baby away from direct sun or smoke
- Look out for any danger signs such as difficulty in breathing, fits, fever, diarrhea or bleeding.
What dietary and lifestyle changes help postnatal recovery?
Dietary changes to help with postnatal recovery include:
- Eating a balanced diet with plenty of healthy foods such as vegetables, cereals, nuts, beans and milk

- Drinking plenty of water
Lifestyle changes should include:

Proven Methods for Postpartum Healing and Well-being
- For personal hygiene: It is important to take warm baths. After a vaginal delivery, you need to be gentle while wiping down there. Always wipe from front to back. After a Caesarean section delivery, you need to check for any signs of infection.
- For vaginal pain: Pain medications may be prescribed by your doctor. Sitting on a padded ring or applying an ice pain to the area can also reduce the pain
- For nutrition: A healthy balanced diet is recommended with resumption of normal dietary habits. An additional 500 calories is needed for mothers who are breastfeeding
- For mental health care: Getting adequate rest and sleep is needed for maintaining your well-being. Getting help with taking care of the baby is a good idea to allow you to recuperate. Prioritise yourself and activities that you enjoy.
- Postnatal physiotherapy: This is essential to strengthened the muscles which have been weakened by childbirth. It includes pelvic floor exercises, abdominal exercises and positioning strategies.
