About Painless Delivery
What is Painless Delivery?
Painless Delivery is a labor management technique that utilizes continuous epidural injections of low-dose anesthesia. This epidural is given through a small catheter to deliver the anesthesia to you in your lower back area. It decreases the pain of delivery by reducing the sensation of the lower body and allows natural delivery to take place successfully.
Benefits and Risks of Painless Delivery
Painless Delivery has several benefits: It reduces anxiety and stress, allows you to stay awake during the birth of your baby, reduces exhaustion and makes the delivery easier. Although it is a safe technique, epidural may cause respiratory problems, back pain, nausea and blood pressure problems. Rarely, there may be headaches, seizures or nerve damage.
Suitability and Eligibility
You are suitable for Painless Delivery if you are seeking pain-free labor or if you are elderly, or if you have medical issues such as high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia, a complicated or prolonged labor; or if surgical procedures have to be performed by the doctor. It should be avoided if you have bleeding disorders or neurological disorders.
Post-Delivery Recovery and Care
Mothers who undergo Painless Delivery experience quicker recovery than those who do not. This allows you to recuperate better with less fatigue and pain. It is necessary to maintain hygiene in your pubic area to avoid infections. Any pain experience after the delivery can be treated by medications prescribed by your doctor.

Painless Delivery FAQs
Is painless delivery safe for both the mother and the baby?
Yes, Painless Delivery is safe for both you and your baby. It has been scientifically proven to not cause any harm to the baby and mother if performed by qualified doctors in a sterile and well-maintained environment. It is as safe as the other delivery options. On a few occasions, allergic reactions, fetal heart rate variations, seizures, postpartum hemorrhage or fetal asphyxia may occur.
Can you have a normal delivery with an epidural?
Yes, you can have a normal delivery with an epidural. Painless Delivery allows you to push effectively during the delivery while allowing you to slightly feel the uterine contractions. You also stay awake during the delivery. In cases where problems with the fetus arise such as abnormal fetal position or slow labor, then a C-section delivery may be required.
What are the differences between natural and painless delivery?
In natural delivery, the labor progresses through stages without any medical intervention by the doctor while in Painless Delivery, the epidural is started after the first stage of labor. Natural delivery may be extremely painful while Painless Delivery gives you fast and effective pain relief. Moreover, recovery after natural delivery is lengthy and exhausting while quicker and more restful recovery occurs after Painless Delivery.
Are there any alternatives to epidural for painless delivery?
Yes, there are a few alternatives. Ethonox inhalation is an option that uses a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide delivered via a face mask as soon as the contractions begin. Opioid injections are another form of painkillers in which opioids are injected directly into the muscles. There are some non-pharmacological options such as acupuncture or hydrotherapy, although not as effective.
What factors determine if I am eligible for painless delivery?
Any woman who is in labor and who requires pain-relief during delivery is eligible for Painless Delivery, especially if episiotomy or c-section may also be required. Your eligibility also depends on the absence of any bleeding or coagulation disorders, infections, spinal cord injury, spinal abnormalities, obstructive cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, central nervous system disorders and increased intracranial pressure.

How much does painless delivery cost in India?
Painless Delivery in India costs between Rs 5,000 to 15,000. This depends on a number of factors such as:
- Geographical location of the hospital: Where the hospital is located and its accessibility affects the cost.
- Reputation of the hospital: Highly reputable hospitals provide quality services which come at a cost.
- Experience and qualifications of the doctors: The number of years of experience of performing Painless Delivery as well as the specialisation degrees of the doctor affects the cost.
- The amount of epidural and other medications required: The dosage of the epidural being used depends on the patient’s comfort and pain tolerance. Accordingly the dose is adjusted and the cost increases as the dose needed increases.
- Equipment and technology at the hospital: State-of-the-art technology as well as modem equipment further increases the cost.
- Brand of the medical products being used: Each pharmaceutical brand costs different from the others depending upon the formulation and packaging.
- Whether a surgical procedure needs to be performed: Additional procedures to be performed during the delivery such as an episiotomy or C-section further adds to the cost.
Methods and Techniques for Painless Delivery
The method and technique of Painless Delivery is as follows:
- While you are in a bent sitting position, the doctor will insert the epidural catheter through your lower back using a thin tube.
- This catheter is connected to an infusion pump which delivers the epidural in required doses. The dose required is adjustable.
- When the active stage of labor begins, the epidural will be administered.
- In 10-15 minutes, the epidural will start to take effect causing numbness in your pubic region as well as your legs, while you remain awake.
- If required, more doses of epidural can be administered to increase your comfort during labor.
