About Normal Delivery
The following provides basic information about Natural Delivery and becoming a mother in a natural manner.
What is Normal Delivery?
Normal delivery is the process by which birth of the baby occurs through the birth canal. It is also called vaginal delivery. It is the most common method of delivery and has the lowest risk.
What Are the Stages of Normal Delivery?
Normal delivery goes through 3 stages:
Labour: It is the stage wherein the cervix gradually opens with each contraction
Delivery of the baby: After the cervix is adequately open, the mother pushes the baby out through the birth canal.
Delivery of the placenta: This occurs after the baby is delivered in which the placenta is detached from the uterus and is expelled out from the birth canal.
Benefits of Normal Delivery
Normal delivery offers several benefits for both the mother as well as the baby:
Benefits to the mother: It leads to faster recovery as there is no surgery involved, reduced chances of risks and complications during the delivery. It also makes breastfeeding easier and hospital stay shorter.
Benefits to the baby: It results in a stronger immune system and lungs of the baby and leads to more skin-to-skin contact with the mother.

Normal Delivery Support FAQs
What if I need pain relief during normal delivery?
Each pregnancy is different and so are the pains experienced during delivery. It is possible to receive pain relief during Normal Delivery to increase your ease and comfort. The professional team can provide you with different options such as pain medications (intravenous or epidural/spinal anesthesia), yoga, breathing techniques and emotional support to help reduce your pain.
Can I switch to a C-section during labor if needed?
Yes, it is possible to switch to a C-section if needed. In conditions such as prolonged labour, fetal distress, placenta previa, hypertension, or any other emergency situations, it may be important that the doctor switches to a C-section to protect the health of the mother or of the baby. Moreover, a Natural Delivery may be painful and therefore, C-section may become a better option.
What are the good signs of normal delivery?
Good signs of Normal Delivery include “water breaking” and a progressing labour with consistent opening of the cervix with each contraction. Moreover, the contractions of the uterus need to feel stronger and stronger with time. The baby will also descend from the birth canal gradually. There may also be abdominal pain from the contractions as well as back pain.
Does normal delivery need stitches?
It is not always necessary for stitches being needed after Normal Delivery. The requirement of stitches depends on whether there is tearing of the perineum (the area between the vagina and the anus). Small tears tend to heal by themselves and don't require stitches whereas larger tears need stitches to be put to help the healing process and to repair the torn tissue.
What are the requirements for normal delivery?
For a Normal Delivery, it is advisable to follow a healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet and adequate physical activity. Normal blood pressure and glucose levels are also important. During Normal Delivery, the proper position of the fetus is also a requirement. The fetus needs to be in an upright position to pass through the birth canal and not in breech or transverse position.

What are the types of Normal Delivery
There are 3 types of Normal Delivery:
- Spontaneous Natural Delivery: In this type of delivery, the mother's labour begins naturally without any medical intervention
- Induced Natural Delivery: If the labour does not begin naturally, induction may be needed to initiate labour. This is done using medications such as pitocin which causes contractions or techniques such as artificial membrane rupture for “water breaking”.
- Assisted Vaginal Delivery: This type of delivery utilizes specialized tools such as forceps or suction to assist in the descent of the baby down the birth canal.
Pain Management Techniques During Normal Delivery
Pain during Normal Delivery is subjective and may necessitate the use of pain management techniques. The pain can be managed using non-pharmacological techniques (without the use of medication) or pharmacological techniques (using medication).
Pharmacological techniques: These are used when potent pain relief is desired. It can be in various forms such as intravenous (via injection or drop), regional anesthesia (epidural or spinal anesthesia) to provide reduce sensation of pain in the abdomen and legs or inhalation (via nitrooxide mask).
Non-pharmacological techniques: These include breathing techniques to reduce the pain of the contractions, certain movements to reduce discomfort, massage and visual imagery techniques to offer relaxation.
