Labour Delivery Room (LDR) FAQs
Why is a Labour Delivery Room (LDR) important?
A LDR promotes comprehensive care since all the facilities right from prenatal care to postnatal care can be provided within the same room. This reduces the need to transport or shift the mother and baby from one place to another to get the services.
Birthing can be a difficult and painful process. A LDR allows the mother to experience birthing and recovery in a warm, familiar and less stressful environment under consistent care of the healthcare team.
What should I bring to the Labour Delivery Room (LDR)?
There are a few things to bring to the LDR such as:
- Comfortable clothing such as bathrobes, nightgowns, nursing bras, underwears, socks and slippers for the mother.
- Warm clothing, socks and blankets for the baby
- Medical files and insurance cards if any
- Optional: books, music players, phone or any other item that the mother needs to increase her comfort
What pain relief options are available in the Labour Delivery Room (LDR)?
The LDR allows you to move into a comfortable position and also allows you to walk around the room so as to decrease your discomfort. There are also facilities for a back massage, breathing techniques and warm bath to decrease the pain.
There are several options of pain medications which can be administered: analgesic injections, local anesthesia (for relief of small areas of pain), regional anesthesia (for relief of pain in the abdomen and legs) or general anesthesia (to put you to sleep in case of emergencies).
Can my partner be present during delivery in the Labour Delivery Room (LDR)?
Yes, your partner can be allowed to be present during delivery in the LDR. in fact, having a birthing partner may help you be more at ease and comfortable to give you emotional support during your delivery.
They can also help with physical support helping to change your position or with moving around the room as per your comfort. The continuous encouragement and reassurance can help calm your nerves to make it an overall satisfying birthing experience.
What happens immediately after delivery in the Labour Delivery Room (LDR)?
After the delivery of the baby and placenta, close monitoring of the mother and the baby is done every 15 minutes for the first 2 hours, every 30 minutes for the next hour and every hour for the next 4 hours.
Skin-to-skin contact between the baby and mother as well as breastfeeding will be encouraged. During the post-partum period you will need to stay for approximately 2 days to ensure safe and fast recovery.
How do I choose the right Labour Delivery Room (LDR) service?
Experience and qualification of the LDR team: To ensure that your baby is in the right hands, it is essential to have qualified and skillful OB/GYN doctors and nurses, as well as anesthesiologists who are specialised in this field.
Layout and space of the LDR room: The LDR room which you will be utilising needs to be spacious and comfortable in terms of lighting, ventilation and bedding.
Facilities provided: Availability of facilities is imperative in the LDR such as prenatal, delivery and postnatal care facilities, in order to have a seamless transition in all the phases of care.
Availability of pain management options: You also need to consider whether the pain medication options you desire are available for administration during the delivery.
Whether birthing partners are allowed in the LDR: Various LDR service guidelines may differ in their rules for having a birthing partner in the room during the room. It is important to check with the team beforehand.
How long does a typical stay in the Labour Delivery Room (LDR) last?
A typical stay in the LDR lasts for a few days (2-4 days on an average). Safety and recovery during the delivery and post-partum phase is the priority of the healthcare team. The stay duration includes:
- 4 hours for pre-delivery preparations
- 8-24 hours for the stages of labour and delivery depending on whether it is your first birth or a subsequent birth
- 4 hours for the post natal recovery and care
- 24-48 hours to recuperate after vaginal delivery or C-section delivery, including time for breastfeeding the baby, getting rest and getting help for your daily activities such as dressing, going to the toilet, bathing, etc.
