About Immunisation & Vaccination
You have the power to protect your children’s health. Vaccines save lives through immunisation which is the safeguard against several deadly diseases.
What is Immunisation & Vaccination?
Vaccination is the process of administering a vaccine (which contains antigenic material) to stimulate a person's immune system. This can be done using oral or intravenous vaccines.
Immunisation, on the other hand, is the result of vaccination by which resistance is developed to an infectious disease (antigen). It occurs via the natural defences of the body after stimulation of the immune system.
What Diseases Can Vaccination Prevent?
W.H.O. and UNICEF has reported the following diseases which can be prevented in children by timely vaccination:
- Diphtheria (whooping cough)
- Hepatitis (liver infection)
- Influenza (contagious bacterial infection)
- Mumps (highly contagious viral infection)
- Measles (highly contagious viral infection)
- Pertussis (contagious bacterial infection)
- Pneumococcal diseases (bacterial infection of the respiratory tract)
- Polio (paralysis due to infection of the nervous system)
- Rubella (German measles)
- Tuberculosis (bacterial infection of the lungs)
- Tetanus (bacterial infection of the nervous system)
- Varicella (chicken pox)

Immunisation & Vaccination FAQs
Why is vaccination important?
Vaccinations are an important tool to protect our children from harmful and potentially fatal diseases, particularly from vaccine-preventable diseases. It is a well known fact that vaccines are beneficial to child development. In consequence of infections and diseases, they have a long lasting effect on the child’s health and growth. This, in turn, leads to stunted growth, poor cognitive development as well as other abilities in adulthood.
At what age should a child be vaccinated?
It is important for parents to make sure their child’s vaccinations are up-to-date. There’s an Immunisation schedule to be followed for infants, children as well as adolescents. Thus, there are specific vaccines to be taken at the following ages: at birth, 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, 1 year, 1.5-2 years, 5-6 years, 10 years and 16 years. Vaccines are most effective when administered in the right dosages and at the right age.
Are vaccines safe for children?
Yes, vaccines are safe for children. All vaccines are specially formulated and tested through clinical trials in different phases so as to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine. Vaccines are approved and thereafter used only if they meet the criteria for quality and safety standards. The benefits of vaccines outweigh the risks considering the potential outcomes of the disease.
What if my child misses a vaccination?
Ideally, it is recommended that the vaccines be given at the right time and age. However, if your child does miss a vaccination, a “catch-up” vaccination may be given. You will need to reach out to your child’s doctor to book an appointment for the vaccination. This helps to make up for any vaccination that was missed within a short period. If you're behind on more than 1 vaccine, your doctor will know which vaccines need to be prioritised.
Can vaccines cause side effects?
The side effects caused by vaccines are mild and last for only 1-3 days. These include:
- Redness or swelling at the site of injection
- Feeling unwell
- Headache
- Mild fever
- Tiredness
- Flu-like symptoms
- Body pain
- Rarely, allergic reactions may occur. These can be treated promptly by the doctor and your child will recover from it quickly.
It should be noted that side effects indicate that the vaccine has taken effect on the child’s immune system.
How do I choose the right vaccination service?
It is imperative to consider the following factors while deciding which vaccination service to choose:
- Immunisation schedule: It is important to ask your doctor whether the National Immunisation Schedule will be followed for your child. This ensures that the recommended dosages and ages will be followed during vaccination.
- Facilities: Vaccines need to be stored at optimum temperature to guarantee its safety and efficacy. Improperly stored vaccines are not only ineffective but may cause harm to the body which is why the right facilities for vaccine handling and storage are essential.
- Trained and qualified staff: There needs to be basic competency of the healthcare workers involved in administering the vaccine. In addition the staff must be trained on how to handle emergency reactions after any vaccination.
How long does vaccine protection last?
Vaccines vary in terms of both their efficacy as well as the duration of their efficacy. The duration of vaccine protection depends on the vaccine-induced immune responses. These determinants are the B-cells, T-cells, antigen form and type as well as the target pathogen- related factors. There are some vaccines which offer essentially life-long protection. These include vaccines such as Measles, Rubella, Hepatitis, etc. On the other hand, some vaccines have a short duration of efficacy requiring frequent booster shots. These include vaccines such as BCG, Mumps, Polio, PCV, HIB, etc. It is important to follow the Immunisation schedule to ensure maximum protection from diseases for your child.
