C-Section Delivery FAQs

C-section is recommended when any of the following are present: previous C-section, a multiple pregnancy, placenta previa, abnormal fetal position, cephalopelvis disproportion, heart conditions.

The C-section procedure takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. This includes the time to deliver the baby safely and to stitch the incision in your abdomen and uterus after that. In case of emergency C-section, it may take as little as 15 minutes to complete

C-section comes with a few risks. These include infection of the wound or uterus, hemmorhage (excessive bleeding), blood clot (deep vein thrombosis), injury to the bladder or bowel, accidental injury to the fetus, uterine rupture with future pregnancies

Recovery time after a C-section is a little longer compared to normal delivery. Immediately after, you will feel pain once the anesthesia wears off and may need helping getting in and out of bed. You may need to be in the hospital for 2-3 days. Full recovery can be expected in 4-6 weeks.

Yes, Vaginal birth after C-section is successful in 60-80% of women. It may be possible to have a VBAC after a C-section if: a low transverse incision was used, it’s not a multiple pregancy, your pelvis is of adequate size

There are a few considerations to ensure a perfect C-section delivery experience.

  1. Reputation of the hospital: It is important to visit a reputed hospital like Maccure to ensure quality of service.
  2. Maternity facilities: The hospital you choose also needs to have the right facilities for delivery as well as postpartum care.
  3. Qualified professionals: The services need to be provided by qualified and experienced doctors and nurses to ensure seamless execution of the delivery.
  4. Empathetic consultation: Your doctor should make you feel at ease with your priorities and concerns regarding the C-section birth of your child. Your doctor should discuss clearly all the advantages and risks of the procedure.

There are 2 types of C-section delivery: Planned C-section and Emergency C-section.

  1. Planned C-section: These are the C-sections that are planned beforehand. This is planned in order to improve the comfort of the mother during her delivery or if it is known that there is a medical condition that may make normal delivery dangerous for the mother or the baby. This ensures safety of the baby and reduces the chances of complications occuring.
  2. Emergency or unplanned C-section: In this type of C-section, the decision to perform it is taken during labor or when a problem arises in labor. In these cases, C-section is determined to be the best course of action. These are done as quickly as possible so as to avoid any negative consequences to the mother or the baby.

One week after the delivery, the staples at the incision site need to be taken out. The site of incision may also feel sore for which cold compress can be applied around the region and pain medications may be prescribed by the doctor. Postpartum recovery takes about 4-6 weeks. During this period, strenuous activities and exercises need to be avoided such as stair climbing, lifting, etc. You may need help during errands like cooking and cleaning. Adequate rest and recuperation time is imperative. In case of bleeding or vaginal discharge, sanitary napkins may be used. Sex needs to be avoided until 6 weeks after the delivery.
